Course Description

This course aims at showing not only how Western civilization has affected the rest of the world but also how it has been influenced and even defined since its beginnings by contacts with other peoples and other civilizations around the world. Special attention will be given to the Classical Era and the Renaissance period. The course emphasizes the history of ideas, presented within a political chronology. Modern and contemporary topics covered in the course include trench warfare, a fuller discussion of the Russian Revolution of 1917, and Lenin and Bolshevism, the post-Cold War era, the East Asian economic crisis, and the expanding role of global agencies like the United Nations and the European Union.
