Abstract

The municipal solid waste consists mainly of the waste generated by households, schools, hospitals, and various businesses (e.g., offices). In addition to the environmental problems, this waste requires proper disposal and land space. In many places in the world, especially in populated areas, the availability of land spaces is limited, and this presents challenges to many governments. To save land areas, many governments opted for the incineration of this waste, as it will reduce the volume of waste by more than 80% of the original volume. Due to the heavy metals present in the incinerated solid waste ash, it can cause environmental problems if not properly disposed of. To address this environmental challenge and save the much-needed land space, municipal solid waste ash (MSWA) can be incorporated in concrete, as partial replacement of aggregate or cement, for the production of construction materials. This will not only reduce the environmental impact of MSWA, but it will save virgin materials and further contribute toward the sustainability of our environment. Pervious concrete is one application where the MSWA can be incorporated. Therefore this chapter attempts to review the literature on the use of MSWA in pervious concrete. Various fresh and hardened properties of paste, mortar, and concrete containing MSWA were explored. These included slump, density, compressive strength, flexural; strength, split tensile strength, drying shrinkage, autogenous shrinkage, expansion, sorptivity, porosity, sulfate attack, chloride penetration and freeze/thaw resistance.
