Adherence of Lebanese Adolescent Students to the Copernican Theory of Mediocrity Regarding Anthropometry, Activity and Social Participation

Abstract

The aim of this study was to set a norm for adolescent anthropometric reference data in Beirut, Lebanon, and study the general physical and social status of this adolescent age group. Additionally, it was aimed to test the Copernican's theory of Mediocrity on this sample. The study sample consisted of 226 adolescents (94 males and 132 females) from five public schools in Beirut. Age range was between 15 and 18 years. In addition to selected anthropometric measurements, physical activity level and social participation level were assessed using Physical Activity Questionnaire for High School (PAQ-A), and Mental and Social Wellness Screen, respectively. Statistical tests were applied to measure normality and distribution. This sample proved to adhere to the Copernican theory of mediocrity since the normality tests proved the total population to cluster around its own normal value regarding any given measurement. Only in the waist to hip ratio did the Lebanese sample prove to be close to the borderline for low risk (≥0.95) and be the highest obtained value in the comparison process. However, the activity level of this sample was low indicating decreased interest in physical activity, and physical wellness. This study inferred that the public school adolescent population of Beirut is adherent to the Copernican theory of mediocrity regarding anthropometry, activity level, and social participation. In other words, the populations' measured characteristics lack variety. The study also showed that the holistic health image of this population is very close to the international standards
