The Faculty of Human Sciences and the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Beirut Arab University organized a symposium entitled “Children Under Bombardment”, in the presence of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Al-Birr and Al-Ihsan Endowment and Beirut Arab University, Dr. Ammar Houry, the University President, Professor Wael Nabil Abdel Salam, member of the Egyptian Senate and President of the Library of Alexandria, Professor Ahmed Zayed, Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences, Professor Siddeeka Lasheen, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science, Professor Mohammad Hassan Kassem, students and a crowd of interested people.
This symposium aimed to focus on the various dimensions of the war on children from the social, psychological and moral aspects and the impact of wars on children’s growth and development with the complete collapse of all basic components of life and the lack of security and stability.
The symposium started with a welcome speech from Ms. Abeer Ghazal, followed by the Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences, Professor Siddeeka Lasheen, who shed light on the suffering of children in warring countries over time, the latest of which was “What the Children of Gaza are living Today.” She called for the need to protect children and guarantee their rights, and urged joint action to provide a safe environment and permanent care for children who were harmed during armed conflicts and wars.
In this context, the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science, Professor Mohammad Hassan Kassem, gave a speech in which he pointed out that the law is based on justice, and asked where is justice in what is happening today in Gaza? The history of the “Zionist entity” is one of massacres, killing and loss of life, and exposure to children and women is considered a blatant violation of human rights, where the enemy targets schools and hospitals regardless of all international conventions and treaties on children’s rights.”
The first topic of the symposium was “The Different Dimensions of the War on Children,” and explored the social dimension with Professor Ahmed Zayed, a member of the Egyptian Senate and the head of the Library of Alexandria. In addition to the psychological dimensions with the professor of psychology at Beirut Arab University, Professor Nermin Mohammad, and the ethical dimensions with the former Director of the Institute of Social Sciences at the Lebanese University, Professor Abdullah Al-Sayyid.
As for the second topic, it dealt with “conventions on paper.” The head of the Department of Public International Law at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Beirut Arab University, Professor Mohammad Walid Abdel Rahim, lectured on “Protection of Children in International Treaties in accordance with the Four Geneva Conventions (1949) and the first “Protocol” and the second (1977), and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989).”
The second lecture focused on “Protecting Children in Islamic Sharia” and was delivered by the Associate Professor in the Islamic Sharia Department at the university, His Eminence the Mufti of Rashaya, Sheikh Wafik Hijazi. His Eminence also commented on “The Role of the International Committee of the Red Cross in protecting children”.
the third lecture was given by the Protection Coordinator - Head of the Protection Department, Ms. Serena Tarabia.
In the third lecture the theme was, “Tragedy in its Many Forms,” journalist and writer Mr. Hassan Al-Zein lectured on the importance of image in the media and the fundamental role that the media plays in shaping or misleading public opinion.
