Launch of the UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Mediation at Beirut Arab University

15 September 2026

Beirut Arab University announces the establishment of the UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Mediation, in a qualitative step that reflects its firm commitment to promoting human rights values and peacebuilding, and to consolidating its position as a leading academic institution at the national and regional levels.

As the first of its kind in Lebanon and the region within the field of Human Rights and Mediation, this Chair was initiated by the university’s Center for Human Rights. It serves as a specialized academic and research platform dedicated to generating knowledge, developing policies, and facilitating constructive dialogue on issues of justice and peaceful dispute resolution.

The Chair aims to advance education, training, and scientific research in Human Rights and Mediation through multidisciplinary academic programs, applied research, and specialized workshops for students, researchers, and professionals, alongside awareness campaigns designed to promote a culture of human rights and civic engagement.

Additionally, the Chair will organize an annual regional training camp bringing together students from Lebanon and across the Arab region. This initiative seeks to foster intercultural dialogue, develop youth leadership and conflict-resolution skills, and build sustainable regional networks of collaboration.

The Chair also strives to establish strategic partnerships with universities, civil society organizations, and international bodies to enhance academic cooperation, facilitate expert exchanges, and solidify Beirut Arab University’s role as a center of excellence in Human Rights and Mediation.

The launch of this Chair represents a pivotal milestone in the university’s trajectory and a major step toward supporting peace education, promoting social justice, and addressing the region's growing challenges through scientific, practical, and dialogue-driven approaches.
