Abstract

The concentration of natural and artificial radio-nuclides in 159 soil samples gathered from 62 sampling locations along the Mount Lebanon province were determined. The samples were collected from uncultivated areas. Analysis was carried of 30%,40% and %50% relative efficiency. The activity concentrations of present radionuclides were determined; the surface activity concentrations were calculated. The content of primordial naturally occuring radionuclides of 238U,232Th, and 40 k ranged from 8.2±1.38 Bq.Kg-1 to 132.23±8.12 Bq.Kg-1, 4.39± 8.12 Bq.Kg-1, 4.39±8.12 Bq.Kg-1, 4.39±0.90 Bq.Kg-1 to 76.85 ±2.74 Bq.Kg-1and from 10.74±0.72 Bq.Kg-1 to 888.3±2.74 Bq.Kg-1and from 10.74±2.74 Bq.Kg and from 10.74±25.9 Bq.Kg-1 respectively. The surface activity concentrations due to the presence of these radionuclides varied between 0.07 KBq.m-2 and 8.1 KBq.m-2 for 238U, 0.11 KBq.m-2 and 7.54 KBq.m-2 for 232 Th and 0.61 KBq.m-2 and 38 KBq.m-2 for 40K. 137 Cs was the only detected anthropogenic radionuclide. Its activity concentration ranged from 0.37± 0.06 Bq.kg-1 to 115.30± 2.41Bq.kg-1, and the surface activity concentration varied from 0.01 KBq.m-2 to 4.51 KBq.m-2 . The total absorbed gamma dose rates in air from natural and artificial radionuclides in these locations were calculated. The air absorbed dose rate is ranged between 3.71 and 90.21 nGy.h-1 with an with an averge of 41.72 nGy.h-1 in which the natural terrestrial radiation contributes in 93% and the artificial radionulides mainly 137 Cs contributes only in 7%. The total effective dose calculated varied in the range of 4.57 μSv.y-1 and 111.83 μSv.y-1while the averge value was 54.6 μSv.y-1 which is below the permissible limit mSv.y-1. The Raeq valuese ranged between 12.85 Bq.kg-1 to 303.8 Bq.kg-1 with an average 109.76 Bq.kg-1 which is lower than the world limit (370 Bq.kg-1) .And the external hazard index value (Hex ) is ranged between 0.035 and 0.82 with an averge 0.3.
