Abstract

The widespread use of x-ray examinations and the increased utilizations of recent development of remarkable x-ray equipments and modern imaging techniques have improved the well being of patients in Lebanon; however , this evolution of imaging has also resulted in a significant increase in the population's cumulative exposure to ionizing radiation. A wide range of radiation doses is delivered to patients by the various diagnostic imaging modalities and sometimes for the same examination type. Even though these procedures are assumed to produce a net benefit, the potential for radiation-induced effects to the patient exists. Understanding the typical entrance doses and the factors that affect them therefore becomes very important. The potential exposure of pregnant patients brings an added responsibility to assess the entrance dose and understand what courses of action might be required depending on the dose received. Reference levels in medical radio-diagnostic practices are present and published for typical examinations and for groups of patients. These levels are expected to be used as guidance by medical practitioners and not to be exceeded when good and normal practice regarding giagnostic and technical performance is applied. In the present work we will study the image quality of conventional diagnostic radiology in terms of film reject rate , in addition to the assessment of patient doses for most common x-ray examinations in terms of entrance surface air krema by measuring the entrance skin dose for standard adult patient within the weight range 0f 60-80 kg and for pediatric patients up to 15 years old in 10 medical institutes (hospitals and medical centers in Lebanon). The results will be compared to the published international reference levels of patient dose. The main objective of this work is to establish base line data on the quality of the images taken in medical institutions in Lebanon and to provide more unified diagnostic radiology practice. This study will be the first step to establish a national reference dose levels in diagnostic radiology in Lebanon.
