Abstract

Wound healing monitoring after surgery is an important concern in dentistry. The endodontic surgery is a dental procedure for treating teeth that did not heal after nonsurgical root canal retreatment or, in certain instances, after primary root canal therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the main clinical findings of surgical wound healing of the soft tissue flap, after using the conventional scalpel and laser in micro-endodontic surgery. Materials and Methodology: This study was carried out as an experimental study, randomized controlled clinical Trial. Fourteen healthy patients (N=14) had teeth indicated to root end surgery in the anterior area selected from the outpatient clinics of Beirut Arab University, Beirut, Lebanon. All steps for carrying out these procedures were the same for all cases except the way of the incision; Group I (n=7) full mucoperiosteal flap incision on the soft tissue done by using Bard-Parker Blades (No.15C). Group II(n=7) the same flap design of Group I (n=7) but by using Diode Laser (with a wavelength of 940 nm set at a power of 1.5 W). Follow-up assessment scale done in the days following the surgery at (Baseline, Day1, Day3, Day7, and Day 30) to monitor the most common surgical complications such as pain, swelling, bleeding and healing. Result: There was no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) in pain, swelling, bleeding and healing between the laser group and scalpel group during all follow up days. Conclusion: All tested clinical variables (pain, bleeding, swelling, wound healing) had no statistically significant difference between the laser and scalpel groups. Treatment protocol including careful training in oral hygiene, combined with a valid surgical technique is therefore essential to obtain the best result of soft tissue healing. Keywords: Diode laser, Micro-endodontic surgery, pain, bleeding, swelling, wound healing
