Representatives from the European Union Tempus Program and the European Commission came to AUB on November 20, 2013, to perform a scheduled monitoring visit of the Tempus funded program, IDEAL. The meeting was attended by the local Tempus office staff in Lebanon, Dr. Aref Al Soufi and Mr. Amer Helwani, as well as the program coordinator of the European Commission Education, Audiovisual and Culture (EACEA) Mr. Jacques Kemp. Also present were the IDEAL project coordinators: Dr. Fadia Homaidan, Ms. Rosie Nasser, and Ms. Razan El Ghousseini. Project partner representatives included: Dr. Bassem Kaissi and Dr. Bassem Nakhle from the Modern University for Business and Science (MUBS), Dr. Charbel Kfouri from the Lebanese University, Drs. Soubhi Abou Chahine, and Wassim Itani from Beirut Arab University (BAU), and Dr. Nisreen Hassan from the University of Balamand (UOB) were present in the meeting and provided their input on the project progress and implementation.
The aim of the meeting was to monitor the progress and achievements of the project, assess whether the project is progressing according to plan, judge whether the project is producing the expected benefits and results and evaluate the visibility and the potential sustainability of the project. The meeting featured a presentation of the IDEAL activities and deliverables achieved during year one. Discussions revolved around the objectives of the project, the choice of partners and their strengths, project implementation according to the timeline, the impact achieved so far, and the project’s visibility and sustainability. The meeting ended with a summary of the meeting and the provision of a list of recommendations presented by Mr. Kemp.
