Department of Chemistry at Beirut Arab University (Tripoli Campus) organized a field trip to Sukleen (Karantina), Sukomi (Karantina) and Leeds (Choueifat) on February 26, 2014. At Sukleen, students were given a lecture about the treatment of solid waste in Beirut (collection, separation, composting, recycling and landfilling). Then they viewed the different stages of composting of biodegradable waste (fruits and vegetables) at Sukomi. Finally, they observed the different steps for recycling (Shredding, washing, melting and pelletizing) of nylon and plastics at Leeds. In conclusion the students realized the importance of solid waste management and protection of the environment from different types of pollution.
