In this talk, Dr. Hegazy will be offering a sustainable solution for both energy production and freshwater scarcity. By harness solar energy to generate electricity and desalination by halophilic archaea, salt-loving microorganisms, through their unique metabolic processes.

Dr. Ghada E. Hegazy is a researcher at Marine Microbiology Department, National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF), Egypt. Her research focuses on the isolation of halophilic archaea and study their applications in different aspects. Dr. Hegazy has an outstanding experience in Microbial Fuel cell (MFC) synthesis for energy production, using marine archaea. She is interested in the nanoparticles biosynthesis and their applications in biosensor field, molecular technique, biosorption of heavy metals and bioremediation of organic contaminants in the marine environment, and finally, she succeed in the production of carotenoids and bio-surfactants from archaea with anticancer and antiviral activity against HCV, HBV, ADV, HSV and SARS viruses.
