Academic advising is the provision of support and advice to students, to help them make informed decisions. Students often find themselves confused when faced with the myriad of choices open to them. Academic advisors at the faculties, thus, guide the students as to how to handle a number of issues, such as:
- Course selection
- Social issues
- Psychological problems
The final decision concerning the goals and the study plan is the student’s responsibility, whereas the academic advisor’s role is limited to helping the student make a decision, identify and evaluate alternatives, and assess the consequences. Academic advising remains a joint responsibility of both the student and the advisor.
