Prof. Ibtihal El Bastawissi

Dean, Faculty of Architecture - Design & Built Environment

The Faculty of Architectural Engineering at BAU was established in 1962. It has an academic vision, mission and aims which are consistent with BAU strategy with the general objectives set by UIA declaration in 2005. In response to the rapidly changing environment, new fields of architecture have been developed globally releasing multiple design and urban approaches; i.e. sustainable, environmental, and digital design approaches. In order to cover these new approaches, the Faculty has lately renewed its name to be the Faculty of “Architecture - Design and Built Environment” in Spring 2016/2017.

The strength of our faculty is our commitment to high quality education. Over the past eight years, BAU has embedded a comprehensive structure of quality assurance procedures and systems crowned by the accomplishment by an unconditioned validation by the RIBA since 2010, which was selected as an international tool to ensure such quality.

The Faculty has proudly the only internationally accredited Architectural program in Lebanon. On February 2017, RIBA confirmed Initial validation and full RIBA recognition of part 2 (after year 6 MArch) and continued recognition and reposition of part 1 (after year 4) effective from 2017 till 2022.

Students receive enriched learning experience with diverse and interacting community of exceptional academic staff with national and international backgrounds. A strategic relationship with a targeted set of peer institutions in Europe and Middle East for students and faculty exchange and collaboration is developed.

This is also supported by the existence of facilities such as the Architectural Library, GIS, Digital Modeling and Environmental Labs, the Model Making Workshop and the Digital Fabrication Lab. The latter is the first of its kind in the region providing an opportunity for a new type of creative industry. As well as organizing conferences, workshops and exhibitions to provide a diversity of theoretical and practical knowledge for future architects.

Over the years, the faculty evolved and expanded with a dynamic up-to-date curriculum, and national and international experiences of academic and practical background and campuses at Debbieh and Tripoli.
