Cross-Sector SDG Dialogues at Beirut Arab University (2019–2024)
Beirut Arab University (BAU) demonstrates a strong commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by actively initiating and participating in cross-sectoral dialogues. Each year, the university holds numerous events, conferences, and programs that bring together academia, government, NGOs, and industry to advance the 2030 Agenda iau-hesd.net. These initiatives span all SDGs – from quality education and gender equality to climate action and global partnerships – and include academic conferences, public policy workshops, training programs, and student-led forums. Below is an updated report (covering roughly 2019–2024) of BAU’s key cross-sector SDG engagements, highlighting both past achievements and ongoing initiatives.
Multi-Stakeholder Conferences and Forums
BAU regularly engages in conferences and forums that foster dialogue on sustainable development with government bodies, international organizations, and NGOs:
- Global Higher Education SDG Forum (January 2021): BAU participated in the virtual international conference “Sustainable and Inclusive Internationalization: Reimagining Approaches in Higher Education in an Era of Global Uncertainties” (20–22 January 2021). This forum – hosted by York University and the International Association of Universities (IAU) – convened educators and policymakers worldwide to discuss SDG integration in higher education. Representing BAU, Prof. Ibtihal El-Bastawissi (Dean of Architectural Engineering) gave a presentation highlighting how BAU advances the SDGs (with a focus on SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through education, research, new innovation labs, and conferences bau.edu.lb. BAU’s role as the IAU global Cluster Lead for SDG 9 was underscored, as the university spearheads international collaboration to promote inclusive and sustainable industry and innovation bau.edu.lb.
- Beirut Urban Declaration Conference (April 2021): In the wake of the August 2020 Beirut Port explosion, BAU joined forces with government and civil society in the “Beirut Urban Declaration” conference on sustainable urban recovery. Held in April 2021, this multi-stakeholder forum brought together Lebanese officials, urban experts, NGOs, and academia to plan a resilient reconstruction of Beirut. BAU faculty participated in the discussions, contributing expertise in urban planning and disaster response. The conference, conducted under the auspices of local authorities, exemplified BAU’s engagement in policy dialogue for SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities bau.edu.lb.
- Scientific Conference on Cities’ Response to Natural Disasters (February 2024): BAU’s Faculty of Architecture and the Tripoli Engineers Syndicate co-organized a scientific conference addressing municipal preparedness for natural disasters. Convened under the patronage of Dr. Nasser Yassin (Lebanese Minister of Environment) and the Order of Engineers (Tripoli branch), this conference united government representatives, engineers, and academics to discuss lessons learned from recent crises and to improve urban resilience iau-hesd.net. BAU faculty and students presented research on disaster risk reduction and urban planning, aligning with SDG 11 and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The event demonstrates BAU’s role in facilitating evidence-based dialogue between policymakers and technical experts on sustainable development challenges.
- Regional and Thematic SDG Forums: BAU also engages in regional SDG-related fora. For example, the university has been an active participant in the annual Arab Forum for Sustainable Development (AFSD) organized by UN-ESCWA, which brings together Arab governments, UN agencies, academia and NGOs to review SDG progress. BAU scholars contribute to panels and networking sessions on topics like peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16) unescwa.org. Such involvement allows BAU to exchange knowledge with policy-makers and civil society beyond campus.
Policy Workshops and Capacity-Building Programs
BAU frequently hosts or co-hosts workshops and training programs that connect students and faculty with external experts, policymakers, and NGO practitioners to build capacity for sustainable development:
- UNESCO “MOST School” on Youth & Policy (2021): BAU partnered with UNESCO and the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development to organize a 3-day capacity-building workshop under UNESCO’s Management of Social Transformations (MOST) program. Titled “Youth Civic Engagement and Public Policies for Urban Governance through Cultural Heritage”, this workshop (held in late 2020 and concluding in January 2021) trained young researchers, students, and municipal officials on evidence-based policy-making iau-hesd.net. Participants from Lebanon and the Arab region explored how youth can inform urban policy and heritage preservation, sharing case studies and policy research methodologies for effective civic dialogue. This cross-sector workshop – involving a UN agency, a local NGO, and BAU’s academic expertise – aimed to strengthen skills for SDG-oriented policy formulation (addressing goals like SDG 11 and SDG 4: Quality Education through civic engagement learning) iau-hesd.net.
- Anti-Corruption Law Workshops (2023–2024): In line with SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, BAU’s Human Rights Center (HRC) has collaborated with international NGOs to educate students and the public on governance and anti-corruption. Notably, BAU HRC teamed up with the Euro-Med Monitor (an NGO) to deliver a series of interactive workshops on Anti-Corruption Laws in Lebanon bau.edu.lb. These sessions (held in 2023) brought together legal experts, civil society activists, and BAU law students to discuss Lebanon’s anti-bribery and illicit enrichment legislation. Students from diverse disciplines engaged in hands-on case studies and debates on transparency in public administration bau.edu.lb. The workshops not only raised awareness of anti-corruption frameworks but also fostered dialogue between youth and policy advocates on strengthening governance. (In a related initiative, BAU hosted a public seminar “Fighting Corruption: Means and Obstacles” for International Anti-Corruption Day, inviting government officials and NGOs to campus for open debate bau.edu.lb.)
- Entrepreneurship Training with USAID (2022–2023): To advance SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, BAU has run capacity-building programs in partnership with development agencies. One example is the “Be Your Own Boss” entrepreneurship workshop series, organized by BAU’s Business School in collaboration with the USAID Higher Education Capacity Development (HECD) program. In the 2022–23 academic year, Dr. Hanadi Taher delivered this workshop (in two editions) to equip students and recent graduates with skills in business startup and innovation bau.edu.lb. The training – supported by USAID and implemented in coordination with other Lebanese universities – provided mentoring in enterprise development, pitching, and sustainable business models. Such programs, involving international development experts and industry coaches, prepare BAU students to become job creators and address economic challenges in line with the SDGs bau.edu.lb.
- EU-Funded Green Energy Project (2022): As part of an EU Erasmus+ collaboration, BAU participated in the “Green Energy for Green Companies (GRENECO)” project promoting sustainable industry (SDG 7 and SDG 9). The project culminated in April 2022 with a multi-stakeholder conference at the Riviera Hotel in Beirut, where BAU faculty, European partners, Lebanese companies, and government energy officials convened to share results bau.edu.lb. The final conference showcased pilot initiatives on renewable energy adoption in local industries, illustrating how academia and the private sector can collaborate on SDG solutions. By hosting training workshops for company managers and engineers throughout the project, BAU helped transfer knowledge on energy efficiency and foster dialogue between researchers, businesses, and policymakers on advancing green economy goals.
Student-Led Initiatives and Forums
BAU empowers its students to take the lead in SDG dialogues, often connecting them with external stakeholders through campus events and clubs:
- NGO Fairs Connecting Students & Civil Society: One flagship student-centered event is the annual NGO Fair organized by BAU’s Human Rights Center – a vibrant forum that brings dozens of NGOs to campus to engage with students on social causes and SDGs. After a hiatus due to national crises and the pandemic, BAU revived this tradition in 2024 with a high-profile fair.

In April 2024, BAU hosted an NGO fair themed “Bridging Gaps, Celebrating Rights, and Advancing the SDGs,” in collaboration with the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO makhzoumi-foundation.org. The event convened a wide spectrum of NGOs (covering human rights, environment, health, education, etc.), government-linked organizations, and international agencies to showcase their work and network with university youth. Students had the opportunity to discuss volunteer opportunities, internships, and joint initiatives addressing the SDGs. Previously, BAU had held a similar fair in April 2019 titled “United Nations SDGs for the 2030 Agenda and Environment Preservation,” which focused on environmental sustainability and the SDGs iau-hesd.net. These fairs have become a platform for dialogue between students and civil society leaders – for example, NGOs like Makhzoumi Foundation, Caritas, Red Cross, and Save the Children have participated to raise awareness on issues ranging from poverty alleviation to healthcare makhzoumi-foundation.orgbau.edu.lb. Such student–NGO forums exemplify BAU’s role in “bridging gaps” by celebrating human rights and sustainable development on campus.
- Youth Policy and Civic Engagement Forums: BAU students also take part in national policy discussions facilitated by the university. In 2023, BAU’s Human Rights Center and Faculty of Law co-hosted a National Youth Policy Symposium in partnership with the Lebanese Ministry of Youth and UNDP. As part of this symposium, BAU students led a workshop on “The Role of Civil Society in Promoting Transparency and Combating Corruption in Public Administration,” alongside NGO experts and public officials (tying into SDG 16). Student delegates from BAU exchanged ideas with policymakers on how youth can drive governmental reforms and accountability instagram.com. Additionally, BAU supports a UNESCO Club on campus that empowers students to organize events around UN themes. This club (affiliated with UNESCO Beirut Office) has led student forums on topics like cultural heritage, peace education, and climate action, often inviting guest speakers from the UN and NGOs bau.edu.lb. Through these avenues, BAU students cultivate leadership and voice in the public dialogue on sustainability.
- Empowering Women Leaders – “Her Civic Quest” (2022–2025): BAU has been a key partner in Her Civic Quest, a multi-university initiative led by the Lebanese NGO Madanyat with support from UNDP. This project aims to strengthen leadership, advocacy, and civic engagement skills among young women – advancing SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 16. BAU hosted Phase 1 of the program, which involved training workshops for female students from BAU and other universities on negotiation, conflict resolution, and public speaking instagram.cominstagram.com. In early 2024, Phase 2 of Her Civic Quest took place (off-campus), bringing together ambitious young women who, over several sessions, developed community service initiatives and policy advocacy campaigns bau.edu.lb. BAU’s Human Rights Center helped facilitate these sessions and provided mentorship. The closing ceremony of Her Civic Quest was held at BAU in mid-2024, celebrating the participants’ achievements in designing SDG-related social projects bau.edu.lb. By engaging in this program, BAU not only opened its doors to an NGO-led effort but also integrated students into a broader network of government advisors and civil society mentors working on enhancing women’s role in sustainable development.
Partnerships and Ongoing Collaborations
BAU’s cross-sectoral engagement on the SDGs is further illustrated by its long-term partnerships and community projects involving governments, NGOs, and industry:
- Institutional Partnerships for SDGs: Under SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), BAU has forged collaborations with numerous organizations to amplify social impact. The university has formal partnerships or MoUs with international NGOs like Save the Children and Action Against Hunger, as well as humanitarian bodies such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Lebanese Red Cross bau.edu.lb. Through these partnerships, BAU students and faculty work on community development projects – for example, delivering aid to vulnerable communities (SDG 1 and 2), offering health awareness campaigns (SDG 3), and supporting refugee education (SDG 4). Government agencies also collaborate with BAU on research and outreach; the Lebanese Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Education have engaged BAU experts in policy consultations and joint events (like environmental awareness campaigns and teacher training for SDG 4). Such partnerships ensure that BAU’s academic resources and student energy are channeled into real-world SDG solutions alongside practitioners.
- Community Outreach and Service: BAU encourages a culture of volunteerism and social responsibility, linking students with NGO initiatives. Its Community Service Unit coordinates student volunteers for activities like tree-planting drives, recycling campaigns, free medical caravans, and literacy programs in underprivileged areas – often in partnership with municipalities and local NGOs (addressing SDGs 3, 11, 13, etc.) bau.edu.lbbau.edu.lb. For instance, BAU students have joined forces with environmental NGOs for coastal clean-ups (SDG 14: Life Below Water) and with charities like FoodBlessed for hunger relief drives (SDG 2) bau.edu.lbbau.edu.lb. These hands-on collaborations provide platforms for dialogue between young volunteers and community leaders about sustainable practices at the grassroots level.
- Research and Innovation Networks: BAU is an active member of international networks focused on sustainable development in higher education. As mentioned, BAU serves as the global IAU Cluster Leader for SDG 9, working with universities worldwide to share best practices in fostering innovation and infrastructure bau.edu.lb. BAU also participates in the UNESCO Global Universities Network and local consortia on sustainability science. Through conferences and joint projects in these networks, BAU faculty engage with government policymakers and industry experts to align research with national SDG priorities (e.g. developing clean energy prototypes or smart-city solutions in collaboration with Lebanon’s Council for Scientific Research and private tech companies). In 2023, BAU’s Innovation Center launched an EU-supported Innovation Hub that brings entrepreneurs, businesses, and students together to incubate start-ups addressing SDG challenges (like renewable energy and health-tech) iau-aiu.net. This hub exemplifies cross-sector partnership by involving corporate mentors and government innovation programs to support student-led ventures.
In summary, Beirut Arab University as an institution actively initiates and participates in cross-sectoral dialogue on sustainable development. Through a rich array of conferences, workshops, training programs, and student-led forums, BAU has created an interface where academia meets government, NGOs, and industry to collaboratively advance the SDGs. The past 4–5 years alone have seen BAU convene stakeholders around critical issues – from urban resilience after Beirut’s port blast bau.edu.lb, to anti-corruption reforms with civil society bau.edu.lb, to youth and women empowerment with UN agencies iau-hesd.netinstagram.com. These efforts illustrate that BAU not only integrates the SDGs into its curriculum and research, but also serves as a platform for dialogue and partnership in Lebanon’s pursuit of sustainable development. By “encouraging student and faculty participation in global networks” and local partnerships for the SDGs bau.edu.lb, BAU is helping to bridge sectors and drive collective action toward the 2030 Agenda.
