Scholarship:

Four scholarships from the French Embassy For Beirut Arab University students [1]

In the framework of the agreement signed between Beirut Arab University (BAU) and the French Embassy in Lebanon concerning SAFAR Program, which focuses on promoting scientific research and stimulating relations between the two parties, BAU has acquired four scholarships from FORSA and SAFAR programs.

Three students have acquired PHD scholarships from SAFAR program, and one student has acquired a Master scholarship from FORSA program, as follows:

1- Mohammad Yakhne from the Faculty of Engineering– Tripoli Branch, has acquired a three-year PHD scholarship in Mechanical Engineering jointly with La Rochelle University after BAU has signed Cotutelle agreement with the University.

2- Roa Rawwas from the Faculty of Architecture-Design and Built Environment – Debbieh Campus, has acquired a six months PhD scholarship to perform part of her PHD research work at Lab'URBA - Laboratoire d'urbanisme. Université PARIS-EST

3- Hitaf Hussein from the Faculty of Science – Debbieh Campus, has acquired a six months PhD scholarship to perform part of her PHD research work at the University of Technology of Compiègne, France.

4- Doha Khalaf from the Faculty of Health Sciences-Beirut Campus, has acquired a six-months scholarship from SAFAR program to perform part of her Master research work in Food Analysis and Safety at the University of Technology of Compiègne, France.

Beirut Arab University Received the Honorable Mention at 2021 Tamayouz Excellence Award [3]

Architect Mounira Al-Halabi, graduate from the Faculty of Architecture - Design and Built Environment at Beirut Arab University has been selected as one of the seven Honorable Mentions Project in the "Tamayouz" Excellence Award of Graduation Projects in Architecture for the year 2021.

Tamayouz Excellence Award is one of the biggest international awards for students of architecture, urban design, planning and garden design where the number of participating projects for this year reached 485 projects from 153 universities in 41 countries worldwide.

Architect Mounira Al-Halabi was able to achieve this result upon participating with her graduation project "Khan Al-Saboun Center for Handicrafts in Tripoli", which she prepared during the academic year 2018 - 2019 under the supervision of Dr. Islam Al-Samahi.

The jury praised the project since it provided a comprehensive study on the relationship between social traditions, crafts and the urban fabric of the city. It also extracted realistic solutions to revive the urban heritage and linked it to the surrounding streets.

This new success for one of the Faculty of Architecture - Design and Built Environment graduates at the international level confirms the distinguished level of the students of this faculty, with the support of its President, Professor Amr Galal El-Adawi, and the Faculty dean, Professor Ibtihal Bastawissi, to advance the educational process and secure all the resources and the latest technologies necessary for it.

Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Young Women Leaders for undergraduate students [4]

The U.S. Embassy in Beirut has announced an academic exchange program for university undergraduate students.

Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Young Women Leaders: This program is for female undergraduate students aged 18 to 25 who are interested in developing their advocacy skills and learning about women leadership and role in the society. The program will take place from June to early August 2023.

The deadline to submit applications is December 31, 2022.

As with all U.S. Embassy-sponsored programs, the U.S. Government pays for all major expenses, including roundtrip airfare, shared accommodation during the program, meals and health insurance. Applicants will be considered without regard to race, religion, sex, age, and/or physical impairment.

Linkages between Family Planning and Women Empowerment [5]

Under the patronage of the office of the Minister of State for Women's Affairs, in partnership with the Embassy of Canada, and in collaboration with Beirut Arab University (BAU), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) organized an awareness creation thematic panel on "Linkages between Family Planning and Women Empowerment”. During this session, Minister Mr. Jean Oghassabian, Canada ambassador Ms. Emmanuelle Lamoureux, and Head of UNFPA office in Lebanon Ms. Asma Kurdahi emphasized the importance of the subject of discussion. Dr. Issam Shaarani, principal investigator of the research conducted by a team of medical students from BAU, presented the key findings of the study funded by UNFPA on Family Planning Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices among Syrian Refugees. Other discussions on the panel were mainly related to the transformative agenda of UNFPA in promoting access to family planning.

BAU Tripoli Campus organized the "Girls Got IT" on Campus [6]

Beirut Arab University- Tripoli Campus in cooperation with the Lebanese League for Women in Business (LLWB) in partnership with DOT, ArabWIC Lebanon, Wie, WIT, and under the Patronage of Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) and sponsored by UNICEF through a generous funding from the Kingdom of Netherlands, organized "Girls Got IT". This event which gathered over 450 Girls between the age of 14 & 17 coming from Northern public and private schools to explore Engineering and Technology".

The objective of the initiative was to encourage girls from public and private schools and from marginalized communities to experience the capabilities of IT (Information Technology) and STEM subjects (Science Technology Engineering, and Mathematic) in order to select them as career choices. This event also serves in promoting essential technology skills for today's global economy and to improve girls’ self-esteem through learning by using hands-on activities; in addition to bridging the gender gap in technology-related fields. 

The Vice President for Tripoli Branch Affairs Prof. Khaled Baghdady congratulated all collaborators on this successful event announcing the commencement of the event by holding 21 different workshops opened by Ms. Asmahan Zein; president of LLWB and followed by welcoming speech from Dr. Wassim Itani; Director of the Center for Continuing & Professional Education & the Center for Entrepreneurship at BAU. The event included speeches for the Keynote Speakers for MEHE Representative; Ms. Nahla Hamati and UNICEF representative; Tamara Zakria and ended up by an inspirational speech for Zeina Daccache; Founder of Catharsis-Lebanese Center for Drama Therapy. 

The event was concluded by Ms. Layal Jubran; CEO & Co-Founder at Mobarmij, Inc. and Ms. Hala Fadel; Co-Founder of Leap Ventures whereby awards were distributed.

Lebanon and Human Rights Round Table Discussion [7]

The Human Rights Center at Beirut Arab University represented by the Senior Specialist Salam Zahran, participated in a round table discussion entitled "Lebanon and Human Rights," that was held at the La Nau Cultural Center at the University of Valencia in Spain.

The discussion dealt with the Human Rights Situation in Lebanon in the context of the recent crisis in light of the financial collapse, Right to Health Medication during the pandemic, and Beirut Blast, with a focus on Lebanese women's rights and Palestinian refugee women in Lebanon. The seminar was accompanied with a photography exhibition by the photojournalist Germán Caballero which depicted the status of the Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon's Camps.

A two-week awareness workshop on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women [8]

A two-week awareness workshop was held on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in collaboration with the Lebanese National Comission for UNESCO and Internal Security Forses ISF at the village of Khrab El Hayatt to raise global awareness on the elimination of violence against women.

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of Lebanese women regarding menopause [9]

Under the patronage of Dr. Najlaa Mashaal Dean Faculty of Medicine BAU and the supervision of faculty staff: Dr. Azza Abou El Naga & Dr. Issam Shaarani, the faculty of medicine at Beirut Arab University held educational presentations across two locations: on April 1st,2016 at Siblin Governmental Hospital and on April 14th, 2016 at the faculty of medicine at BAU.

Ahmad Chaaban, Walaa Mahmoud, Sandra Anka, Sandy El-Sayed, and Ghinwa Lawand have been working since 2014 on a study under the title: “Knowledge, attitudes and practices of Lebanese women regarding menopause”. The aim of the round was to share the results obtained in this study with the hospital staffs, faculty’s staff and students.

Throughout the presentation, the five medical students discussed the results they obtained regarding: knowledge, attitudes, symptoms, complications, treatment and screening regarding menopause among Lebanese women. They were able to prove their hypothesis, based on the results they obtained, that Lebanese women lack scientific knowledge, positive attitudes, and proper practices towards menopause and its related issues.

Congratulations to Rawan Nashi for completing the 2022 Study of United States Institutes Young Women Leaders Program (SUSI)!

Rawan Nashi was selected as one of the four Lebanese candidates to participate in 2022 SUSI Young Women Leaders Program from June ,25 till July 30 - 2022, an exchange program funded by the US Department of State and implemented by the Women’s Global Leadership Consortium. It was hosted by Saint Mary’s College, South Bend, Indiana, where women from the Middle East, North Africa, and the United States were brought together for an intensive five-week study on Civic Engagement for Young Women Leaders.

This experience places women among a diverse group of people, pushing them to engage in cross-cultural conversations, extending the borders of their own culture, and thus, helping them formulate a global mindset.

Beirut Arab University team wins the first runner-up place in the 13th Edition of the Arab Startup Competition [12]

A Student Team from the Faculty of Architecture - Design and Built Environment at Beirut Arab University won the first runner-up place in the first startup competition that presents creative ideas at the Arab world level. The team was qualified to be among the finalists internationally where teams from eleven countries around the world participated in this competition.

The Faculty of Architecture - Design and Built Environment team has established a new company for building materials that were made from more than 60% of recycled materials, which are often non-recyclable. The company is one of the new companies that are specialized in concrete systems and called (INFRASTIC) which is a new construction technology company specialized in concrete systems for both vertical and ‎horizontal applications

INFRASTIC team has won the first runner-up place in the Arab Startup Companies competition about the “ideas track” in its 13th edition in 2020 which was organized by MIT Enterprise Forum (MITEF) – Pan Arab. Many teams from around the world participated in it where eleven teams reached the semi-finalist stage.

The Arab Startup Companies competition is an annual competition that was launched by MIT forum for Entrepreneurship in the Arab World since 2006. It aims to empower the youth and promote the incubator environment for innovation and entrepreneurship in the Arab region. Entrepreneurs in this competition have competed along three tracks: ideas track, startups track and social entrepreneurship track.

The winning team was granted $5000 as well as mentoring and pre incubation offer at Flat6Labs Beirut and was consisted of the following students: Louay Ghezzawi, Iman Najjar, Haidar El Mokdad and Jana El Chami, and was supervised by the Engineer Rasha Sukkarieh and the directions of Professor Ibtihal Youssef El Bastawissi, the Dean of the Faculty who said: “this qualification is an assertion about the scientific, technical and creativity level of our students and their ability to adapt with the changes on the entrepreneurship level.

A Seminar on Women’s Rights at BAU In Collaboration with the EU Delegation [13]

The Human Rights Center at Beirut Arab University organized in collaboration with the European Union Delegation in Lebanon a seminar on “Women’s Rights: Challenges and Opportunities for Gender Equality in Lebanon”. The event which was held on the 3rd of December, 2013 was attended by Prof. Dr. Amr Galal El Adawi, President of BAU, Mrs. Angelina Ekhorest, European Union Ambassador, Mrs. Ursula Fahringer, Austrian Ambassador to Lebanon, Deans of Faculties, Mr. Issam Houri, BAU Secretary General, Wakf El Bir and Ihsan’s Members of Board of Trustees, Directors of BAU Centers, BAU Administrators, and 250 students from various majors.

Prof. Dr. Amr Galal El Adawi reiterated in his word the role of BAU in supporting human rights, in particular women’s rights, through the Human Rights Center, as well as the establishment of a specialized Women’s Studies Diploma and a legal clinic where students – under the supervision of licensed lawyers – aid disadvantaged target groups to fight for their rights.

Mrs. Angelina Ekhorest, European Union Ambassador, addressed the students, reminding the audience that Lebanon is an important partner to the EU, not only in terms of dealing with the Syrian crisis, but also in terms of human rights. This is manifest in the effectiveness of parliamentary elections and structural reforms in the economic and social sectors.

Dr. Omar Houri, Director of the BAU Human Rights Center reviewed in his word the foundations of a woman’s right to grant her family her nationality in accordance with the Lebanese Constitution and the International Law. He added that there are over 18000 Lebanese women married to foreigners in Lebanon. There are no accurate statistics as to the number of children in these marriages, but it is possible to imagine the amount prejudices these children and citizens are exposed to. Such discrimination impacts upon medical care, education, employment and other aspects of daily life. 

The seminar also included an intervention by Mrs. Ursula Fahringer, Austrian Ambassador to Lebanon, and Lawyer Layla Awada from “Kafa”. The seminar was moderated by journalist Anne-Marie El Hage from L’Orient Le Jour.

Awareness Workshop Celebrating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women [14]

For the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women, the Human Rights Center at Beirut Arab University in collaboration with the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO (LNCU) and Internal Security Forces ISF organized a workshop on Friday 4th of December 2020 at the village of Khrab El Hayatt- Akkar within the framework of 16 days to raise awareness globally on the elimination of violence against women.

The workshop, was represented by Dr. Tala Zein from the Lebanese National commission for UNESCO, Ms. Salam Zahran from the Human Rights Center at Beirut Arab University, and Major Youssef El Dekweir from the Internal security forces. It targeted 25 participants mainly females, aimed at increasing public awareness on violence against women; building capacity and understanding main definitions and concepts in the framework of Women’s Rights; engaging youth in promoting women’s rights and contribution to fight discrimination within their society. In addition, participants were trained on entrepreneur skills in developing projects and business.

BAU delegates applications for admissions to the administrative section which is in charge of viewing, evaluating each application and responding, the university controls the number of students who enter each year and always seeks gender equity and this in turn is approved by the quality unit, the university emphasizes that its admissions are for men and women, there is no discrimination of any kind and the rules and regulations are the same for both genders.
