SDG 3: GOOD HEALTH AND WELLBEING

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being

Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for people of all ages. Lebanon has long had a relatively advanced healthcare system for the region, but in recent years, the country has faced significant challenges to its healthcare sector due to an ongoing economic crisis, political instability, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the aftermath of the Beirut port explosion in 2020. These crises have placed immense pressure on the healthcare system and the well-being of the population.

Lebanon’s Approach to SDG 3: Health and Well-Being

Healthcare System and Crisis Response:

Lebanon’s healthcare system has historically been a mix of public and private services, with the private sector playing a significant role in delivering healthcare. However, the economic collapse has severely impacted the sector. Hospitals and clinics have struggled with shortages of essential supplies, medicine, and equipment due to the devaluation of the Lebanese lira and the rising costs of imports. The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has been working to maintain healthcare services despite these challenges, focusing on ensuring access to essential services, especially for vulnerable populations.

COVID-19 Response and Vaccination Campaign:

Lebanon faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the government, through the Ministry of Public Health, managed to implement a nationwide response, including a vaccination campaign with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and international partners. The Lebanon National Deployment and Vaccination Plan (NDVP) was launched to ensure that vaccines were made available to all residents, including Lebanese citizens, refugees, and migrant workers. Despite initial delays, vaccination efforts were ramped up to combat the spread of the virus.

Support from International Organizations:

Lebanon’s healthcare sector has received critical support from international organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations (UN), and the World Bank, to stabilize the healthcare system. International aid has been crucial in providing hospitals with medical supplies, vaccines, and financial resources to keep essential services running. Organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have also stepped in to provide healthcare services to vulnerable populations, including refugees and those affected by the economic crisis.

Mental Health Initiatives:

Lebanon has been increasing its focus on mental health, particularly after the traumatic events of the Beirut explosion and the stresses of the economic collapse. The National Mental Health Program (NMHP), launched by the Ministry of Public Health in collaboration with WHO and the UN, aims to integrate mental health services into primary healthcare. The program works to raise awareness about mental health issues, reduce stigma, and ensure access to mental health care for the Lebanese population.

Universal Health Coverage Challenges:

Lebanon has been striving to achieve universal health coverage (UHC) to ensure that all citizens have access to essential health services without facing financial hardship. However, the country’s economic situation has made this goal difficult to attain. Many citizens have lost access to private health insurance, while public hospitals are underfunded and overstretched. The government continues to work on strengthening the public healthcare sector and expanding social protection programs to address these challenges.

Beirut Arab University and SDG 3: Promoting Health and Well-Being

Beirut Arab University (BAU) plays an active role in contributing to SDG 3 through its health-related programs, research, and community initiatives aimed at promoting health and well-being in Lebanon.

Healthcare Education and Training:

BAU offers a variety of programs in the health sciences, including medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and public health. These programs prepare students to become healthcare professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to address the country’s health challenges. By training future doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health professionals, BAU is directly contributing to improving healthcare delivery in Lebanon and supporting SDG 3.

Medical Research and Innovation:

BAU is involved in research that aims to tackle pressing health issues in Lebanon. The university conducts research in areas such as non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mental health, and the effects of pollution on public health. By engaging in health research, BAU contributes to evidence-based policymaking and the development of innovative solutions to improve health outcomes in the country.

Health and Well-Being Services:

BAU provides healthcare services to the local community through its medical and dental clinics. These clinics offer affordable healthcare services, including consultations, treatments, and dental care, to those in need, particularly individuals from low-income backgrounds. By providing access to healthcare, the university helps address the health and well-being needs of the local population, particularly in a time of economic hardship.

Public Health Initiatives:

BAU actively participates in public health campaigns aimed at raising awareness about various health issues, such as non-communicable diseases, mental health, nutrition, and preventive care. The university organizes health awareness days, screening programs, and vaccination drives for both students and the broader community. These initiatives are essential in promoting health education and encouraging healthy behaviors.

Mental Health and Student Well-Being:

Recognizing the importance of mental health, BAU offers counseling and psychological support services for students through its Student Affairs Department. The university has been working to promote mental health awareness on campus, organize mental health workshops, and provide resources for students to manage stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. This aligns with Lebanon’s broader efforts to address mental health as part of SDG 3.

Collaboration with Health Institutions:

BAU collaborates with local hospitals, clinics, and international health organizations to provide students with clinical training and internships. These partnerships allow students to gain hands-on experience in real-world healthcare settings, preparing them to contribute to Lebanon’s healthcare system. In addition, these collaborations help BAU stay at the forefront of health research and innovation.

Lebanon’s healthcare system faces significant challenges in achieving SDG 3 due to the economic crisis, political instability, and external shocks like the Beirut explosion and COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, the Lebanese government continues to work on maintaining essential health services, improving mental health care, and collaborating with international organizations to stabilize the sector.

Beirut Arab University is making important contributions to SDG 3 through its health education programs, research, and community health initiatives. By training healthcare professionals, conducting research, and providing healthcare services to the community, BAU is playing a critical role in promoting health and well-being in Lebanon. Through its focus on public health, mental health, and innovative health solutions, BAU is helping to improve the overall health and well-being of the Lebanese population during challenging times.

https://www.bau.edu.lb/Public-Relations/News/Beirut-Arab-University-Opens-Health-Care-Center-Diagnostic-and-Therapeutic-Services-Under-the-Patronage-of-the-Minister-of-Public-Health-Dr-Firas-Al-Abiad

The President of Beirut Arab University, Professor Amr Galal El-Adawi, launched the Health Care Center “Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services” in Beirut campus under the Patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Firas Al-Abiad, represented by Mr. Omar Al-Koush. The ceremony was attended by The President of the University Board of Trustees, Dr. Ammar Houry, Vice-Presidents, Deans of faculties, Secretary-General, Dr. Omar Houri, Presidents of Orders, University Presidents, hospital directors, and a crowd of interested people.

The ceremony started with the Lebanese national anthem and the University anthem, then the ceremony master, Ms. Rima Chehab, said “In these difficult circumstances, and based on the University’s pioneering role in serving the surrounding community, we are convinced of the need to promote these social and human values among our students and motivate them to serve as an example of solidarity for the best of the future of this country, this center opened its doors thanks to the initiative of Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation.

The President of the University, Professor Amr Galal El-Adawi, said: “The Health Care Center was established a few years ago by opening the medical clinics and was then supplemented with departments related to diagnostic treatment and therapeutic services, such as laboratories and radiology. We also thank Khalifa Bin Zayed Foundation for providing us with equipments”.

For this reason, we must establish all medical and diagnostic services to serve the people of this country. The University is keen to provide these high quality services to all segments of society in appropriate prices. It is worth mentioning that the center has its own management that is independent of the university where it plays its role far from the educational process”.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Women and Health

https://www.bau.edu.lb/Research/Women-and-Health

Every year around 8 million young children die of preventable causes, and more than 350,000 women die from preventable complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. These unacceptable deaths can and must be avoided by ensuring that all women and children get the prevention, treatment and care they need. They must have access to family planning, vaccines, and proper nutrition, as well as prevention of and treatment for pneumonia, diarrhea, HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases.

Our aim at the Faculty of medicine at Beirut Arab University is to conduct a Research-integrated hospitals and community work that will help to optimize maternal and infant health outcomes and to develop early intervention and prevention strategies to reduce the risk for lifelong chronic disease. Some of the ongoing research projects at our Faculty include autism awareness in the Lebanese community, Awareness of the Lebanese pediatricians, family physicians and obstetricians about initiation and maintenance of breast feeding, Awareness of Lebanese Med students towards abortion, Prenatal and post-partum complications, Awareness of long-term contraception among the Lebanese population and many other ongoing researches.

Finally, we think that women and children are considered the most vulnerable components in the society beside the men who complete it. It is true that women are the real architects of the society and the children are the real engines of life. In order to keep this integrity, we believe that research is integral to excellence in healthcare.

“I call on everyone to play their part. Success will come when we focus our attention and resources on people, not their illnesses; on health, not disease. With the right policies, adequate and fairly distributed funding, and a relentless resolve to deliver to those who need it most – we can and will make a life-changing difference for current and future generations.” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Global Strategy for Women's and Children's health, September 2010.

Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) systems use a digitilized mammographic image to search for abnormal areas of density, mass, or calcification that may indicate the presence of cancer. The main step in CAD system is the mammogram images segmentation. The objective of the talk is to present a mammogram images segmentation technique based on statistical distribution for breast cancer detection.

Social Psychology and Interpersonal Processes
