Empowering Families: Diabetes Awareness Campaign at Iman High School

15 November 2025

The Faculty of Pharmacy at Beirut Arab University (BAU), in collaboration with Iman High School, Saida (IHS), organized a diabetes awareness campaign for parents in recognition of World Diabetes Day.

Under the supervision of Dr. Khouloud Housary, Clinical Lecturer and Preceptor at the Pharmacy Practice Department, senior pharmacy students from BAU worked closely with Ms. Khadija Jardali, Health Counselor at IHS, to deliver evidence-based education and patient-centered services. The event was further supported by Dr. Rania Itani, Pharmacy Practice Experience V/VI Coordinator, who ensured the meaningful engagement of students as part of their experiential training, and Dr. Mohamad Abdallah, Clinical Lecturer at the Faculty of Pharmacy, who provided expert guidance on clinical diabetes management.

The campaign featured several key health services, including:

• Blood glucose screening to evaluate glycemic control

• Blood pressure and BMI measurements, used within a structured risk-assessment tool to determine appropriate screening frequency

• Personalized lifestyle and dietary counseling, focusing on balanced nutrition, physical activity, and prevention of diabetes progression

The event also included interactive games, health-related activities, and gifts to engage participants and promote learning in a friendly environment. A special highlight of the campaign was the donation of a continuous glucose monitoring sensor to a Type 1 diabetes student, supporting improved self-monitoring and glycemic control.

This initiative successfully enhanced community awareness, empowered families to take proactive steps in diabetes prevention and management, and reinforced interprofessional collaboration between the Faculty of Pharmacy and the school community. Participants expressed high satisfaction with the campaign, emphasizing its positive impact on understanding diabetes, improving confidence in disease management, and fostering healthier lifestyle practices.
