Environmental Sustainability in dentistry plays an important role. To recognize and encourage sustainable dental practices, dental ASTM Standard Practice for Managing Sustainability in Dentistry (WK 34710), published in May 2015, provides "a set of generally recognized activities governing management of sustainability in dentistry and related dental service practice. This provides a road map for individual dental practitioners as well as dental service organization to better internalize their respective sustainability goals and aspirations with day-to-day practice. It also serves as a benchmark for suppliers to dentists and other oral care professionals to promote design, development, and delivery of equipment and supplies with minimized externality. The department of developmental sciences is planning to conduct research on the safety measures during usage of dental materials and on dental laboratories waste management aiming to reduce their impact on the environment through incorporating sustainable waste management practices.
Moreover, infection control (IC) activities in the research setting include the development of meaningful and effective policies on specific topics such as hand and respiratory hygiene. Prevention of infection in health care workers and management of occupational exposure to transmissible agents are important aspects of the role of an IC practitioner. Collaborative research projects between the faculty of dentistry, the Faculty of pharmacy and the Faculty of health sciences are ongoing especially to evaluate the infection control on microbiological level through different dental clinics. Other researches will be directed toward safe and new clinical waste disposal methods and to develop infection control programs in a way to maintain sustainable environmental development in dentistry.
