A lot of topics under the environmental research subtheme identify many factors that can affect health and has impact on it. For example, research concerned water treatment and management and solid waste management can have a positive impact on the quality of water and soil and this contribute to ensure good health and well – being for individuals and societies. By analyzing water quality, availability, and sanitation systems, researchers can identify potential risks, such as contamination or scarcity, and propose solutions to ensure access to clean and safe water. Environmental research provides valuable insights for integrating environmental education into formal and informal learning settings. For example, by studying ecological systems, biodiversity, natural resource management, and production of renewable energy from solid waste, researchers can develop educational materials, curricula, and programs that promote environmental awareness, conservation, and sustainability.

Science and Technology

Description of Subtheme:

The Faculty of Engineering conducts research that has relevance to Environmental Issues with a mission to support planning of environment-friendly energy systems in Lebanon and the Middle East region. For example, some research is concerned with water treatment and management, soil contamination, renewable energy production and using of artificial intelligence in the solid waste management process in Lebanon. This can have a positive impact on the quality of water and soil, and to renewable energy production that would be beneficial to health and wellbeing. Other research areas are related to definition of problems in fluid transportation, enhancement of oil recovery, treatment of sludge resulting from storage of crude oil and its derivatives. This would have a direct impact on the preservation of the environment. Several research topics currently being tackled by researchers in the faculty of engineering fall under this theme. Examples of these topics are listed here below:

  • Sampling, analysis, and water treatment of different water resources
  • Studying of Water resources and environmental management
  • Using of Soil contamination and Bio-ash in construction
  • Utilization of Raw sewage sludge in construction
  • Producing of Renewable Energy from solid waste and animal waste
  • Producing environmentally friendly energies needed by green buildings without resorting to polluted energy sources.
  • Diversifying renewable energy sources and selecting the most appropriate ones according to Lebanon’s geography
  • Designing of hydraulic machinery using solar energy.
  • Studying of thermal and acoustic comfort using smart materials
  • Studying of Aerodynamics and acoustic vibration damping
  • Optimizing hydraulic fracturing operations
  • Exploring renewable alternative fuels for gasoline & diesel engines
  • Increasing thermal, acoustic, and other comfort inside the building.
  • Using artificial intelligence in the solid waste management process in Lebanon (automatic sorting and recycling).
  • Exploring problems in fluid transportation systems
  • Enhancing oil recovery using detergents
  • Biological enhanced oil recovery
  • Studying of treatment of sludge resulting from storage of crude oil and its derivatives
  • Preventing sludge formation during crude oil storage
  • Developing new methods for the recycling and reuse of plastics
  • Developing new methods for the remediation of contaminated soil
  • Studying of liquid-solid mass transfer under different conditions

Researchers at the Faculty of Engineering show their interest in these topics by conducting research and reporting the outcomes in prestigious international and national journals, magazines, symposia, conferences, and meetings.
