Description of Subtheme:
Complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) has been described as “diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention which complements mainstream medicine by contributing to a common whole, satisfying a demand not met by orthodoxy, or diversifying the conceptual frameworks of medicine.”
Generally, persons who choose CAM approaches are seeking ways to improve their health and well-being or to relieve symptoms associated with chronic, even terminal, illnesses or the side effects of conventional treatments. Other reasons for choosing to use CAM include having a holistic health philosophy or a transformational experience that changes one’s world view and wanting greater control over one’s own health.
CAM popularity seems to be increasing not only in our surrounding but also in different parts of the world. For instance, the use of (CAM) in the United States has rapidly gained popularity in the last half century. Herbs and dietary supplements are among the most widely used form of CAM. Females used CAM more frequently and were more likely to self-administer CAM therapies and products. Upon a quick look on our surrounding many members of our population are using herbs and alternative medicine to cure certain diseases.
We at the Faculty of Medicine at Beirut Arab University touched this importance and are looking forward for research activity in such sector. For this, ongoing studies about the usage of Pimpinella Anisum and post-partum pain are being conducted. Nevertheless, our enthusiasm in CAM is find to find answers to many key questions that are yet to be answered.
“Many of those in the medical fraternity instantly label treatments in the traditional, natural or holistic health fields as quackery. This word is even used to describe Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Indian Ayerveda, two medical systems which are far older than Western medicine and globally just as popular.” ― James Morcan, The Orphan Conspiracies: 29 Conspiracy Theories from The Orphan Trilogy.
“You know what they call alternative medicine that's been proved to work? - Medicine.” ― Tim Minchin.
